Even with more tutorializing, new players in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite may feel a bit lost and directionless. Unlike Pokemon Go – where the objective was obviously to catch them all, Wizards Unite has many moving pieces and different activities, and depending on where you live, you may be dropped into a bustling world with icons all over the map.
This page will give you tips and guidance on what to focus on and all the things you should do first in Wizards Unite.
Step 1 – Fill Out Your Ministry ID[edit]
Before you get overwhelmed by all the menus and icons all over the place, why not take a moment to personalize yourself. Click on the icon in the bottom left part of the screen on the main map, at which point you’ll be able to customize your ID in several ways:
- Portrait – Take a selfie, or take advantage of several different filters and costumes to make your wizard-self stand out.
- Title – Show off your accomplishments to your friends by picking a title, and check back as you unlock achievements for even more.
- House – No self-respecting Harry Potter fan would miss out on the chance to rep their favorite Hogwarts House. Thankfully, no sorting hat is required – you choose!
- Wand – Put some flair and customization into your coming battles by picking out your ideal wand. You can choose from the type of wood (wand color), the core (spell color), and the length the wand – which will be represented as you cast spells against Confoundables and in Challenges.
- Achievements – as you progress through the game, you’ll unlock achievements that you can stamp on your ID to show off to friends when they go to inspect your Wizard ID. Check back often for new Achievements you’ve unlocked!

Step 2 – Track Down Confoundables[edit]
Where Pokemon Go had you catching them all, Wizard Unite is a bit more complicated. Essentially you’re tracking down Foundables and warding off Confoundables to add to your Registry – which span a number of categories.
Like Pokemon, these events appear randomly as you travel around, marked by large colored icons:
It’s worth trying to find different types in the opening hours, as you’ll get bonus experience for finding new things, and using different spells on each of them to level up that much faster.
As you find more objects to add to your Registry, you’ll gain levels in that particular category – which in turn unlocks more items and perks, but more on that soon.
Step 3 – Recharge at Inns[edit]
You won’t be able to run around casting spells forever. Much like Pokemon Go, casting spells will use up energy, and at the start you’ll only have 75 Energy that can deplete faster than you’d think.
In order to get some of that energy back, hit up every Inn you can find (they look like large houses on the map). While here, you’ll get to pick from one of five random food items, which can replenish anywhere from 1-6 Energy.
You’ll have to wait 5 minutes before you can get more energy, and you can always look on the map for Inns with smoke coming out of the chimney to know which Inns are still on a cooldown
If you still need more Energy, you can also try your luck at pulling herbs out of Greenhouses, leveling up, or possibly completing tasks. In the worst case scenario, you can also pay gold to recharge your energy fully, but Gold is in short supply unless you want to pay real money for it.
Step 4 – Start Brewing Potions and Unlocking Portkeys[edit]
Between tracking down Unfoundables and recharging your energy, keep a look out for random smaller items that appear on the ground in your travels. Tap to pick up ingredients – which can be used to craft a variety of Potions.
Tapping the Potions icon in the Suitcase will let you dump in set ingredients you find to make a variety of potions: increasing your power in casting spells, healing damage from challenges – and much more.
Unforunately, these potions can take anywhere from 2 to 12 hours at the start, so make sure you’re always brewing some type of potion instead of waiting until you need it to start crafting.
You’ll also start finding strange boxes – Portkey Portmanteaus. These work a bit like Pokemon Egg Incubators – you’ll have to begin unlocking them with a key, which then requires distance travelled to fully unlock. Once unlocked, the Portkey lets you travel to a special place to obtain rare items not found elsewhere.
Because of this, and because you can always have at least one Portkey unlocking with a Golden Key, you should start unlocking them whenever possible and use any Silver Keys you find to unlock additional Portkeys at the same time.
- Paramount Portkey Portmanteaus require 10km
- Precious Portkey Portmanteaus require 5km
- Prized Portkey Portmanteaus require 2km.
Portkeys can spawn as randomly as any ingredient, so keep your eyes open for a strange box!
Step 5 – Take on Daily Assignments and Achievements[edit]
After you get the hang of how things work, don’t just walk around without purpose! The Assignments tab in the bottom right corner lets you see currently assigned tasks and achievements waiting to be unlocked.
By regularly checking in on what is expected of you, you can stand to earn a lot of bonus items and currency by quickly knocking out objectives when you know what to look for.
This is also one of the best ways to earn Gold aside from leveling up, which can be used to purchase inventory expansions, replenish your energy, and much more.
You’ll also get a list of story-themed SOS Assignments, which in addition to giving you bonus XP, also gives you more background into the story behind Wizards Unite and the Calamity the wizarding world is experiencing – if you’re into that sort of thing.
One of the more end-game aspects of Wizards Unite is taking on the fortresses that you find when exploring the world. Once you feel like you have a handle on tracing spells and have some potions on you, travel to one and try taking on the first section by yourself or with a friend.
a Fortress Challenge requires Runes, which are mostly given to you from getting better ranks in each of the Registry sections – which is why finding Confoundables and Foundables are so important. The higher levels you get, them more powerful runes you’ll acquire.
Once inside a Fortress, you’ll have to battle against enemies to complete challenges. This will include holding down on the screen until the marker moved with your finger aligns with the point highlighted on the enemy – at which point you’ll need to trace a line to damage them. Enemies can also damage you, so take a break to trace a quick line of protection to mitigate damage and keep yourself alive longer.
Defeat all the enemies in a challenge, and you’ll get more rewards and experience, which will put you well on your way to taking on tougher challenges.
