It’s not a planned trilogy, but there are still no plans for extra content.

Update 6/27: It turns out reports that Astral Chain was planned to be the first game in a trilogy were caused by a mistranslation in an interview with game director Takahisa Taura. Taura clarified on Twitter that he said he is simply thinking about how Astral Chain could be expanded into a trilogy if the first game sells well, not that the first game is already planned to set up two more.

It’s a subtle but important distinction to make, as the implication of this game being only the first of three is that the story it tells might leave things hanging. Taura’s tweet did, however, reconfirm the initial reports that no additional content is planned for Astral Chain.

Original story follows.

Astral Chain, PlatinumGames’ upcoming Nintendo Switch game, might be the first game in a trilogy but don’t expect additional content directly following its release.

In an interview with Astral Chain’s director, Takahisa Taura, IGN Benelux got more information regarding the game’s future. “There are currently no plans to release extras for Astral Chain,” said Taura as translated by Google, so unless plans change we shouldn’t expect much in the way of DLC.

Instead, PlatinumGames hopes to turn Astral Chain into the first of trilogy – provided it sells well of course. “We [want to] make the game as a trilogy and [Astral Chain] is the first part of that trilogy, said Taura, “if this game sells well, then we may see how the story of the series continues.”

Astral Chain at E3 2019

We got our first in-depth look at the story during E3 2019. Earth is under extra-dimensional attack and you’ll have to face down the end of the world using the Legion which are captured versions of the game’s enemies, the Chimera.

With additional dimensions at play, there are endless directions for this story to go after Astral Chain. Perhaps the Chimera won’t be overthrown or maybe a new type of enemy will appear. Either way, you’ll be able to take on this campaign alone or with a friend via local co-op but with slightly increased difficulty.

Astral Chain Release Date

In addition to the new story trailer, more was shown during the Nintendo Treehouse presentation and on IGN’s E3 2019 stage. Astral Chain is coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch with a release date of August 30, 2019.
