A New Jersey family’s home may have been subject to a meteorite crash, though thankfully no one was hurt.
As reported by CBS News Philadelphia, the family discovered a metallic object that is believed to be a meteorite in their house, after it managed to leave a hole in the building’s roof earlier this week. The potential meteorite, black in colour and potato-sized, was discovered in the corner of a bedroom, having apparently smashed into a hardwood floor before bouncing around the room.
No one in the family was hurt by the ordeal, and there wasn’t any serious damage done to the property aside from the hole in the roof, according to police in Hopewell Township, north of the state capital Trenton. If you’re looking for something more specific than potato-sized, it measures roughly 4 by 6 inches (10 by 15 centimeters), coming to roughly four pounds (1.8 kilograms) in weight.
According to Suzy Kop, who was one of the family members living there, believed that someone might have just thrown a rock into the upstairs bedroom, but realized quickly that it was more complicated than that. “We are thinking it’s a meteorite, came through here, hit the floor here because that’s completely damaged, it ricocheted up to this part of the ceiling and then finally rested on the floor there,” Kop told KYW-TV. “I did touch the thing because it thought it was a random rock, I don’t know, and it was warm.”
The family are planning to have it examined by an astrophysicist to figure out what it is. Kop also said that hazmat officials checked them for any traces of radioactive exposure, though results came back negative.
