Since its official unveiling at E3 2019, Marvel’s Avengers, set for a May 15, 2020 release, has promised free DLC characters to come post-launch. And as we learned recently, Crystal Dynamics is looking to make each of those newly added characters as unique and diverse to play as the five Marvel heroes present in the base game.Speaking to journalists after our hands-on experience of Marvel’s Avengers at PAX West 2019, Crystal Dynamics’ Head of Studio Scot Amos explained that characters added post-launch aren’t simply going to be reskins of Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, and Captain America.

“We want to make sure it feels like, ‘Wow this is who this character should play like.’ So it’s not like, ‘Oh this is just a reskinned version of X, Y, Z. That wouldn’t be fun for us,” Amos said, noting that they don’t view the existing characters as classes to filter future additions into.

“There are so many unique purposes for each different Avenger, we don’t think about them as class and style. We say, ‘What’s great about this hero, what’s great about this character?'”

While Amos didn’t speak to who those future characters might be (though we already have seen a trailer that indicates a new take on Ant-Man will appear in Marvel’s Avengers), Amos did explain the developers’ motivations for wanting to make future characters feel distinct and not share movesets with pre-existing heroes.

“We want it to feel like, I won’t mention a name, but this hero feels like…’Ah that’s the dream that I want for that character.,'” Amos said. “Because if it starts feeling like reskins, that’s no fun. But the idea of having tons of skills and their own unique heroics and their own storylines. because remember [new heroes] come with storylines for what they’re doing in this world. So we need to make sure each hero feels unique as each hero, even the ones that add on past launch.”

While we now know to expect some distinct heroes on the way, IGN did previously theorize about Marvel’s Avengers DLC characters we’d like to see who would be similar to existing heroes.
