Hideo Kojima has taken to Twitter to clear up how player perspective works in Death Stranding

– but in typical fashion the answer is enigmatic.”Since I get this question alot, DEATH STRANDING is different from stealth game,” he tweeted. “You can enjoy First Person View but not a First Person Shooter game. It’s brand new game genre that adapted the concept of strand that we call Action Game, Strand Game (Social Strand System).”

By “first person view but not a first person shooter,” Kojima seems to be referring to moments demonstrated in the recent gameplay trailer from Gamescom. In it, the player leads Norman Reedus’s character Sam to fall off a cliff. The subsequent impact of landing face first in grass sets the baby floating in the canister strapped to Sam’s chest bawling, and the camera switches to first person so the player can direct Sam to soothe the baby back into silence. For all movement and traversal, however, the camera in the demo is in third person.

It would seem Kojima is confirming that first-person view is possible in Death Stranding, but not in the “first person shooter down-the-barrel-of-a-gun” way. Instead first person will be used for specific actions, or perhaps to get a better look at an objective in the distance.

What Kojima means by “Action Game, Strand Game (Social Strand System)” is, however, beyond us. But lets face it, this isn’t the first time Kojima has invented a genre. In another tweet, he likens the genre name to Metal Gear Solid’s ‘Tactical Espionage Action’ tagline.

Kojima also recently took to Twitter to clear up a burning question from fans sparked by the Gamescom trailer – namely, can you see Norman Reedus’s one-eyed-trouser-snake in Death Stranding? The answer is no.

Death Stranding is set to release on November 8 on PlayStation 4.
