Early this morning, Nintendo announced the Nintendo Switch Lite: a smaller, cheaper, handheld-only version of their highly-popular Nintendo Switch

hybrid handheld/console. Naturally, the Internet has opinions on the matter and, unsurprisingly, not everyone agrees on if the Switch Lite is what they want from Nintendo. Some who almost exclusively play Nintendo Switch in handheld mode are largely excited by the announcement, parents and thrifty consumers are similarly intrigued, and a lot of fans are excited to get some colorful new hardware to play Nintendo Switch games on.

However, many fans mocked the idea of a Switch that doesn’t “switch,” some lamented the fact that Nintendo opted to announce a Switch Lite before announcing a beefier hardware upgrade for their current generation of hardware, and some were even relieved that a more scaled down Switch means they won’t feel the need to upgrade to a new piece of hardware just yet.

A Device for Gamers on the Go

Nintendo is positioning Nintendo Switch Lite as a portable-only alternative to the original hybrid Switch, causing fans who mostly game on the go to react positively, while others lament its inability to be docked and be played on a TV.

Parents and Thrifty Shoppers Rejoice!

With removed features, Nintendo Switch Lite is able to come in at a cheaper price point than the original. With this, parents and those shopping on a budget are liable to go for this cost-effective option.

Colors Colors Colors

Nintendo Switch Lite comes in turquoise, yellow and gray, with a special Zacian and Zamazenta Edition featuring cyan and magenta buttons launching just before Pokemon Sword and Shield later this year. Fans are generally positive on these colorful new additions.

A Switchless Switch

While the removal of a docked mode is highly intentional, fans didn’t miss a beat in pointing out that the newest member of the Nintendo Switch Family… can’t switch.

The Wait for Nintendo Switch “Pro”

Because early reports of Switch updates suggested both a cheaper, portable-centric version and a more powerful Nintendo Switch upgrade were in the works, many fans are just waiting for a Nintendo Switch “Pro” announcement.

A Sigh of Switch Relief (and a Bit of Buyer’s Remorse)

Interestingly, some fans expressed relief that the more powerful version of Nintendo Switch wasn’t announced, allowing them to save a bit of money until that system may eventually come around. However, some did show a bit of buyer’s remorse, having just bought a Nintendo Switch before the Lite was announced.

While Nintendo’s announcement of Nintendo Switch Lite came out of the blue this morning, it’s far from the first time Nintendo has done interesting things with its hardware revisions. For more on Nintendo Switch Lite, check out when you can preorder the handheld device.
