The DLC trailer highlights a first look at Shang Tsung gameplay
Mortal Kombat 11’s Kombat Pack has been detailed in a new trailer that revealed Shang Tsung gameplay, alongside the names of other upcoming guest characters who will be released subsequently over the coming months.
Early Access to fighter Shang Tsung will be available on June 18, as well a Klassic Arcade Ninja Skin Pack. The Kombat Pack in its entirety will introduce the following fighters:
- Shang Tsung
- Nightwolf
- Sindel
- Spawn
- Two more guest characters
The reveal trailer, viewable above, does not indicate who those other two characters may be, but as the tease of a couple more fighters is displayed, the sound of a chainsaw can be heard, along with blood splattering the on-screen text. The Kombat Pack is available individually for $39.99 or as part of the Mortal Kombat 11 Premium Edition for $99.99. All characters, skin, and gear in the Kombat Pack will be released in the coming months.
The Kombat Pack will also include skin and gear for each of the DLC characters, along with 19 additional skins.
Spawn is a bit of an expected inclusion in MK11, as Spawn creator Todd McFarlane said last December that he believed Spawn would be coming to the then-unreleased MK11. Spawn finally confirmed for a Mortal Kombat game brought to an end a bout of guest appearance rumors and reports, as even back in 2015, McFarlane thought a deal was being worked out that would allow Spawn to come to Mortal Kombat X. (That never ended up happening.)
Spawn will be voiced by Keith David, the original voice of Spawn from HBO’s animated series. Shang Tsung, meanwhile, will be playable for those heading to E3 at WB Games’ booth and features the likeness and voice of Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, who played the character in the original 1995 Mortal Kombat film.
Mortal Kombat 11 topped the sales charts in its debut month April, and IGN’s Mortal Kombat 11 review said “It’s a rare fighting game that hits just about every note as strongly as Mortal Kombat 11 does.” Our separate Mortal Kombat 11 Nintendo Switch review said “It’s impressive that Mortal Kombat 11 plays as well as it does on Switch, but it loses a lot when you’re on the go and away from wi-fi.”
Since its release, Mortal Kombat 11 and its developer NetherRealm Studios have faced controversy both about in-game and development aspects. NetherRealm responded to allegations of “predatory and abusive behavior” and other allegations made by current and former employees. The company, in part of a statement following these accusations, said “We are actively looking into all allegations, as we take these matters very seriously and are always working to improve our company environment. There are confidential ways for employees to raise any concerns or issues.”
And after its launch, Mortal Kombat 11 has faced criticism for its overall loot loop, including the grind needed in the Towers of Time, which has been an area NetherRealm has attempted to address. MK11’s microtransactions, in conjunction with the game’s grinding aspects, has also been a large topic of discussion. IGN’s own Mitchell Saltzmann, who reviewed MK11, broke down some of the lingering issues with MK11 and what could be done to fix them.
