Mellody Hobson and George Lucas attended last night’s Met Gala in New York to support their friend Lewis Hamilton who was one of this year’s co-chairs being responsible for setting the theme of Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.

The Star Wars creator and THX 1138 director (put some respect on it) pulled up to the gala with his wife Mellody Hobson, who leaned into the theme significantly more than her husband. Hobson Lucas showed out in a subtly bejeweled tweed suit adorned with brooches and chains, very much in keeping with the Superfine theme of the night. George took a far more restrained route, opting for a simple three-button navy suit (with all three buttons fastened). It’s fairly indicative of their dynamic: Lucas has become one of the preeminent wife guys of his era, rarely seen out in public without Hobson and often in mall food courts, waiting patiently for his wife as she shops. He has never seemed like a guy who appreciates the spotlight, so it tracks that he’d keep it simple on a red carpet as major as the Met Gala and let Hobson take the spotlight.

Still, he couldn’t help but turn heads with his footwear choice. He walked the red carpet in a pair of all-black Nike Flex Experience RN 7s, a restrained runner that’s a part of a long-tenured budget-friendly running line for the Swoosh. Currently on its 12th incarnation, the RN 7 hasn’t been available in years, which means Lucas likely pulled the peak dad move of liking the shoe so much five years ago that he bought multiple pairs so he’d never run out. Tough to say for sure if he had the Met Gala in mind when he made that call but we’re inclined to say probably not.
