In celebration of Minecraft’s 15th anniversary, Netflix has a new animated series set in its world. This series will be the second adaptation of the hugely popular survival sandbox game known for its blocky textures currently in development, as a movie starring Jack Black is also in the works. The series doesn’t have a release date yet but is said to be coming “soon.”

The announcement came in the form of a short teaser trailer that begins with a creeper (the green four-legged monster that has become something of a mascot for the franchise) walking onto the screen and exploding in its signature fashion. The teaser cuts to a large cavern full of lava pouring down from the ceiling into a large lake and then the camera zooms in towards a giant Netflix logo, after which Netflix X Minecraft is shown on screen. The series will be animated, presumably in the same blocky manner as the game, by studio WildBrain, who has worked on other Netflix projects such as Sonic Prime, Ninjago: Dragons Rising, and Carmen Sandiego.

The series will reportedly feature an original story with new characters. A more story-focused approach to Minecraft was previously done by Telltale Games in 2015 with the episodic game Minecraft: Story Mode.

The announcement of the animated series is part of a number of reveals made to celebrate the game’s 15th anniversary. Earlier this month, as part of the celebration, a similarly short teaser was released for the Minecraft movie which will star Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones and Aquaman) and Jack Black (The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Kung Fu Panda) and is currently slated for an April 4, 2025 release date. Despite being 15 years old, Mojang Studio’s survival sandbox game has only continued to rise in popularity and is one of the best-selling games of all time. With so many new projects on the horizon for the property, it looks like it won’t be slowing down any time soon.
