In April 2013, Patton Oswalt made a guest appearance during Parks and Recreation Season 5 as Garth Blundin, a local resident of Pawnee who went on an epic filibuster rant that covered everything from the MCU to the return of Boba Fett in the Star Wars universe. In 2021, fans recognized that a scene from The Book of Boba Fett seemed as if it was directly lifted from Oswalt’s improvised scene. Now, Oswalt has stated that it was no coincidence.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Oswalt revealed that The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett producer Jon Favreau affirmed that the homage to Oswalt’s Parks and Rec rant was completely intentional.
“When The Book of Boba Fett came on [Disney+], Jon Favreau confirmed this for me, they cut the opening shot to match my filibuster,” said Oswalt. “You can sync them up time-wise… [it] pans down from the twin suns, the hand comes out of the sand, you can match it up to my filibuster. They did that on purpose.”
Oswalt noticed the same thing in 2021, and retweeted the following post that matches his words with the action.
The official Parks and Recreation YouTube channel posted the extended cut of Oswalt’s rant over 11 years ago, and it’s still there for posterity.
Disney and Lucasfilm haven’t revealed any future plans for Boba Fett, but perhaps he’ll return in the upcoming film, The Mandalorian and Grogu. That movie will hit theaters on May 22, 2026.
