Issue 108 of the monthly Blocks magazine takes a look inside the LEGO Harry Potter Gringotts Bank, with the sets designers who discuss how they pulled it off, with sketch models giving an insight into their process.
Gringotts Bank is the most surprising LEGO set of the year so far. Harry Potter fan or not, you can’t help but be wowed by the way the vault holds up the entire building – and in Blocks magazine Issue 108, the designers responsible reveal how they pulled it off, with sketch models giving an insight into their process.
Issue 108 is available worldwide as part of a subscription or a single issue at blocksmag.com and will be in UK stores from October 5.
Everyone who subscribes by November 2 will be in with a chance of winning a massive prize – LEGO Harry Potter 76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank – Collectors’ Edition.
In Issue 108, Senior Designer Justin Ramsden and Designer George Gilliatt explain how they took what fans wanted – a new model of Gringotts Bank to match the existing Diagon Alley – and took it to the next level by delivering one of the most ambitious LEGO models, with the bank balancing atop the vault. The feature is illustrated with prototype versions of the model so you can see how the design team tested out their ideas.
If you’re still saving up your Sickles for the big one then fear not, because Blocks has exclusive instructions showing how to build a mini version. That’s one of three sets of ‘Quick Build’ guides that are great for anyone looking for a LEGO project that won’t need a huge commitment of time or parts. On that topic, there’s a parts list for each of the three models.
Many fans do want a bigger challenge though and you’ll find just that with instructions to build hair pieces for 40649 Up-Scaled Minifigure. You can give the character one of two classic LEGO wigs from the early days of the blocky characters.
The LEGO Trains story continues, exploring how the design team came up with three systems – 4.5V, 12V and push-along – that were all part of one larger system. It’s a fascinating look back at when the first realistic trains were delivered through LEGO bricks.
Within the 116-page magazine you’ll also find insight into the design of the Insect Collection, amazing MOCs from Brickscalibur, reviews of the latest Star Wars sets, the top 10 brick-built characters and much more.
