Video gaming has been a huge hobby for the masses since its popularisation through the 80s and 90s. Although the format of video games can date back to the late 50s, computerization only allowed them to become popular and playable in the 1980s onwards.
The new gaming software of the time and the companies that followed contributed to the gaming boom of the 1990s and the beginning of new Star Wars console games. In the last few years, thanks to internet technology Star Wars games have transitioned to mobile and online platforms.
As well as including games, digital collectibles of Star Wars characters have also been made into non-fungible tokens, known as NFTs for die-hard fans. These are created using blockchain technology that exists on these platforms and they exist as a person’s digital asset. They can be purchased using specific cryptocurrencies and a cryptocurrency wallet.
These kinds of drops are very popular for those who are fans of popular pop culture franchises, and Star Wars is no exception.
However, how fans can purchase these kinds of collectibles often varies based on the franchise, the blockchain that it exists on, and the acceptable forms of payment. Ethereum is one of the blockchains where NFTS exist in abundance. The ether (ETH) coin that accompanies is often used to purchase them, like Bitcoin, which has its own NFT purchase system.
Although commonly Bitcoin is used by crypto enthusiasts more so for online purchases and in online casinos to play BTC poker games rather than for NFTs. This is because many online casinos accept Bitcoin due to its popularity and stability which makes it popular for gaming.
While playing online can be fun, this article is about the blasts from the past! This article will take you through a time warp of our favorite 4 retro Star Wars games.
4: Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (1996) on Nintendo 64
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, a ground-breaking game launched on the Nintendo 64, is ranked fourth. Playing as a mercenary Dash Rendar is transported to the events between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The reviews remain positive 20 years later.
Shadows of the Empire was the title that enabled the franchise to enter the 3D gaming age. Players have a choice for their gaming experiences thanks to the elements of vehicle combat and platform gaming. You will encounter foes like Boba Fett and Darth Vader, which fans who love the ‘goodie versus baddie’ dynamic will be keen on.
Shadows of the Empire however, has limitations in terms of its graphics and gaming controls compared to more recent games, but honestly, that was pretty common for nineties games.
3: Star Wars, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 (1997) on PC
Star Wars, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 is a game that revolutionized Star Wars games. Lightsaber action and force abilities and the first-person shooter gameplay where the player aims to become a respected Jedi Knight.
The story follows Kyle Katarn, a Jedi who used to be an Imperial, who turns to the good side as he prepares to fight evil forces. If you’re a Jedi fan, evidently this could be the game for you as you fulfil your childhood dream of becoming one. However, don’t get too excited, as the alternate endings and routes that players can take may not have your desired outcome, but at least you’ll be entertained finding the endings! If this is not your favorite, we are sure there will be plenty of new Star Wars games in the future for you to play. After all, there are already some in development!
2: Star Wars: Super Star Wars Series (1992-1994) on SNES
The Super Star Wars series for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, (SNES), comes in our second place spot. The series includes, of course, Super Star Wars, Super Star Wars Return of the Jedi and Super Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back. The trilogy and its magic also shine through with this game series, and is a love letter to original fans.
You can play as Luke Skywalker, Hans Solo, and Princess Leia. There are opportunities for combat sequences true to the trilogy that will induce nostalgia. Battles include head-to-head with Stormtroopers, AT-ATs, and Bossk, in platform-style sequences.
This platforming ability in particular is what keeps the game authentic. Although the game has had its fair share of complaints about being too difficult, as there aren’t many save checkpoints.
While Super Star Wars series was called ‘brutally, hairpullingly hard to beat’ by IGN in one game review, it still stands the test of time almost 30 years later.
1: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003) on the Xbox
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) lands in our number one spot for the best retro Star Wars Game. Yes, we know it is less ‘retro’ than the others, being released in the 2000s, but considering that was 20 years ago now, it still counts. KOTOR helped to birth the role-playing (RPG) genre for the Star Wars series.
The prequel takes place thousands of years before the films, providing interesting storytelling possibilities for players. Characters are buildable and somewhat customizable in KOTOR. You have the option to choose the dark side or the light side, just make sure you consider your choices first! It has everything: stellar character development, great storylines, and backstories.
The turn-based combat system of gameplay focuses on strategy and fights. For fans, the game also expands on possible landscapes and areas that players can play in and includes other areas of canon Star Wars lore.
In July, the game celebrated its 20th anniversary, and in 2021, a remake was announced. It was halted in 2022 and has been the subject of mere speculation since the announcement. However as recent as May, the speculation around a remake seems to be just that – speculation – as the developers do not want to comment on the game.
