Move over, Batman and Aquaman. Barbie now holds the Monday and Tuesday domestic box office records for Warner Bros, bringing in $26.1 million and $26 million, respectively. That means the film based on an iconic doll has made an astounding $52 million combined over two weekdays.
Deadline reports Barbie’s haul topped Aquaman’s $21.98 million take from December 25, 2018–the previous Tuesday record holder for Warner Bros. As for the Monday crown, Barbie beat out The Dark Knight’s $24.4 million total from July 22, 2008, per Deadline. On top of the DC superheroes, Barbie also stands above another iconic series from the studio: Harry Potter.
Looking at Tuesday grosses across all studios, Barbie sits in fifth place behind the likes of Spider-Man: Far From Home ($39.2 million in July 2019) and Transformers ($27.8 million in July 2007). Not to be outdone, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer also saw strong returns Tuesday, earning $12 million. That brings the film’s domestic total to over $107 million.
Barbie and Oppenheimer already pushed the US box office to the fourth-highest weekend total ever. Looking ahead, projections show the films bringing in another $70 million and $35 million, respectively, this coming weekend. Those estimates would best newcomer Haunted Mansion, Disney’s flick that’s expected to rake in roughly $30 million.
