Director Greta Gerwig’s new movie, Barbie, is in theaters now. But what is she going to make next? She is lined up to direct new Chronicles of Naria movies for Netflix, a prospect she said in a new interview makes her “terrified.” Gerwig also addressed the possibility of directing a James Bond movie someday.
Appearing on the latest Inside Total Film podcast, Gerwig said she is only just coming to terms with her responsibilities for making the next Narnia films.
“I haven’t even really started wrapping my arms around it, but I’m properly scared of it, which feels like a good place to start,” she said, as reported by Deadline. “I think when I’m scared, it’s always a good sign. Maybe when I stop being scared, it’ll be like, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t do that one.’ But yeah, no. I’m terrified of it. It’s extraordinary and it’s exciting.”
Gerwig will direct two Narnia movies for Netflix, which acquired the rights to the series in 2018. The movies are still early in development, so don’t expect them to come out anytime soon.
As for other upcoming projects, Gerwig said she wants to make “big things and small things and everywhere in between.” Asked if she might want to make a James Bond movie one day, she said right now she’s focused on Narnia, but isn’t ruling anything out.
“Oh my God. We’re going to just stick with some lions and some dolls for the moment,” she said of Narnia and Barbie. “But you never know. I really like [Bond franchise producer] Barbara Broccoli, so…”
Before Barbie, Gerwig directed the movies Lady Bird and Little Women.
As for Barbie, the movie is already doing big business at the box office, having picked up $22.3 million from its Thursday preview showings–that’s the most money any 2023 movie has earned for its Thursday premiere. Barbie is expected to make twice as much money as Oppenheimer and win the weekend.
