Pikmin 4 is right around the corner, but that didn’t stop Nintendo from flooding us with new information about the game during today’s Nintendo Direct. From a new underground area, to night expeditions, to a new demo out next week, here’s everything you need to know about Pikmin 4.
The main draw in the newest game in the Pikmin series is Oatchi, a dog-like companion that assists you and your Pikmin as you try to survive the cute and hostile alien world. In addition to helping out with lifting and pushing items, you and your Pikmin can ride him across land and water. You’ll also be able to upgrade his abilities over time, increasing the amount of damage he does, the number of Pikmin he can carry, or the total weight of objects he can push.
You’ll need those upgraded abilities to explore Pikmin 4’s new underground areas, which appear to be more heavily centered around contraption-based puzzles. With more treasures and new enemies, it’s a lot less open than the aboveground portions, but should provide an interesting challenge.
Finally, Pikmin 4 marks the first time in the series your explorer will be able to go on nighttime expeditions. Wild creatures are in a frenzy, making them much more dangerous, but you’ll have the help of the new Glow Pikmin, a species only out at night. Instead of throwing them one by one, you can focus them into one glowing energy ball to release all at once, doing huge amounts of damage.
If you want to try it for yourself, a demo for Pikmin 4 will be available on the Nintendo eShop on June 28. The full game will be released one month from today, on July 21.
