Fights now play out using a ‘Live Command RPG Battle’ system, meaning combat is turn-based but will have a degree of fluidity. Skirmishes begin wherever you’re standing, for instance, which is important because if your characters happen to be close to objects you can use in a fight (like a bike) you can use it to your advantage.
“The situation completely changes depending on your distance from the enemy character you’re attacking, as well as the “city objects” in the area,” explained Yokoyama. “If a bicycle or something similar rolls by, you can kick it at the enemy, or pick it up and attack with it. This action also depends on the character’s class and traits.”
The city and background NPCs will carry on moving around as the battle takes place, so the world will remain “constantly in motion” around you. Yokoyama also confirmed that turn order is determined by stats, but “that doesn’t mean you’ll get the same result by attacking just any enemy.” He warned that attacking an enemy far away on your turn is likely to be interrupted by another character.
Yakuza: Like A Dragon was officially unveiled last week and is headlined by an all-new main character, Ichiban Kasuga, who’s another former Yakuza member who’s taken the fall for a crime he didn’t commit.
