No Man’s Sky

Beyond, the next big update for Hello Games’ procedural space exploration sim, is live. But some players are reporting fairly regular crashes on consoles and PC which makes exploring the universe a bit difficult.Hello Games’ procedurally generated space exploration game, No Man’s Sky, just received another major update today. The Beyond expansion, which was released for free, adds VR support, expanded multiplayer support, and a bevy of quality-of-life improvements to make jumping in for new players even easier.

The update has only been live for a couple hours, which isn’t enough time to get fully immersed in the new Beyond update. But some players are just having trouble accessing the content. There are reports of numerous crashes on both consoles and PC, as well as some wonkiness trying to get VR to work properly on both SteamVR and PSVR. Some players are also reporting that No Man’s Sky Beyond’s new social hub, the Nexus, is the source of a lot of crashes.

No Man’s Sky developer Hello Games has acknowledged some players are having trouble with the Beyond update. Hello Games founder Sean Murray told IGN, “Already today we have brought together a build for some of our statistically more important issues on Xbox and PS4. Similarly on PC we expect to get changes on experimental on PC very soon after release.”

No Man’s Sky was first released in 2016 and promised players they could explore over 18 quintillion planets, all procedurally generated. Despite large amounts of hype, No Man’s Sky was received tepidly at launch, and Hello Games spent the following years markedly expanding the content and gameplay in No Man’s Sky.

A Foundation Update in 2016 added quality-of-life improvements, a home planet feature, and a survival mode. The Path Finder update in 2017 added new vehicles and base features, and the Atlas Rises update added over 30 hours of narrative.

In 2018, Hello Games released No Man’s Sky Next, a major update that added full multiplayer, character customization, new terrain, and further base building features. And Hello Games followed Next with its latest update, Beyond.

Murray said that following the launch of Next, Hello Games was working on hot-fixes “often daily,” so there’s a good chance we’ll see hot-fixes deployed for Beyond as well.
