Every Course Theme in Super Mario Maker 2 has the ability to be altered in unique ways by applying Night Mode. Night Mode can be triggered by placing the Angry Sun enemy in your level. Press the Angry Sun to toggle it into the Moon. The Moon flies down like the sun does, but clears enemies onscreen if it touches Mario (instead of hurting him). Once you’ve placed the Moon into your level, the theme will be next to the theme selections in the editor (pic below). Night Mode is unavailable for the Extra Game Styles like Super Mario 3D World.

How Night Affects Certain Objects[edit]

Night Mode can also alter certain powerups. 1Up Mushrooms turn into Rotten Mushrooms! This makes 1Up Mushrooms unavailable during Night Mode. These Rotten Mushrooms will chase after Mario and will even jump to higher areas to reach him! Touching a Rotten Mushroom will damage Mario.

Other Power Ups behave differently at Night as well.

  • Super Mushroom: Hops around sporadically instead of moving across the ground. Tries to evade Mario.
  • Fire Flower: Travel away from Mario and will even jump or turn around to evade him.
  • (Super Mario Bros.) Big Mushroom: Hops around sporadically instead of moving across the ground. Tries to evade Mario.
  • (Super Mario Bros. 3) Tanooki Leaf: Floats up and away.
  • (Super Mario World) Cape Feather: Rapidly floats down side to side.
  • (New Super Mario Bros. U) Propeller Mushroom: Swiftly flies diagonally in three directions and then flies away.

How Night Affects Themes[edit]

Odd things occur when the sun goes down in the Mushroom Kingdom. Course themes in Extra Game Styles like Super Mario 3D World, do not have a Night mode variant.

Ground (Night)[edit]

Goombas float around.as if they are underwater. They move around as if swimming.

Underground (Night)[edit]

The level is upside down! Left and Right still move you in the same direction, but Up and Down are flipped! Press Up to ground Pound and Down to open doors.

Underwater (Night)[edit]

The screen darkens completely except for a spotlight on Mario. Fireballs illuminate the area around them. Grabbing a Super Star will brighten the whole screen!

Desert (Night)[edit]

Sandstroms periodically blow through the level. The wind will change directions/speed randomly.

Snow (Night)[edit]

All the terrain is slippery like ice blocks! This causes you to slide and makes it difficult to stop moving.

Sky (Night)[edit]

Gravity is greatly reduced. This causes longer/higher jumps and slower falls. Enemies are also affected by this. Goombas, however, float around as if they are underwater. They swim to move around. Goombrats and Shoe Goombas also behave this way.

Forest (Night)[edit]

The water turns poisonous. Touching it is instant death!

Ghost House (Night)[edit]

The screen darkens completely except for a spotlight on Mario. Fireballs illuminate the area around them. Grabbing a Super Star will brighten the whole screen!

Airship (Night)[edit]

Goombas float around as if they are underwater. They swim to move around. Goombrats and Shoe Goombas also behave this way.

Castle (Night)[edit]

Mario behaves like when he is underwater. You can only move around by swimming.
