Could we finally see Darth Revan on the big screen?

A Star Wars film based on BioWare’s Knights of the Old Republic is reportedly in the works at Disney, and it could be the first of a potential trilogy.

This report comes from Buzzfeed News, and while it should be taken with a grain of salt, the outlet says its information comes from three sources close to the project.

These sources claim it’s currently being written by Laeta Kalogridis, known for writing Shutter Island and acting as executive producer on Avatar – her most recent credit is as a co-screenwriter on Alita: Battle Angel.

Kalogridis was reportedly hired to develop the script in Spring 2018, and is allegedly close to finishing the first script of a potential KOTOR trilogy. Buzzfeed’s report name drops Bastila Shan, Darth Malak, and Darth Revan as potential characters.

Back in April, during Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm president Kathaleen Kennedy confirmed the studio is developing something relating to KOTOR saying “Yes, we are developing something to look at. Right now I have no idea where things might fall, but we have to be careful that there is a cadence to Star Wars that doesn’t start to feel like too much.”

Knights of the Old Republic was released in 2003 and was set roughly 4,000 years before the rise of the Galactic Empire that occurred in Revenge of the Sith. Its plot involves Darth Malak, a Dark Lord of the Sith and former apprentice to the sinister Darth Revan, using a Sith armada against the established Republic. Set in a time when Jedi were far more prevalent than in the original Star Wars trilogy, KOTOR remains well-known for its story and a major plot twist.

We know that three Star Wars films are scheduled for release following this year’s The Rise of Skywalker. It was revealed that the first Star Wars film set to be released following the Skywalker Saga will come from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss – it’s unclear at this time if this project and the supposed Knights of the Old Republic film are related.

Kennedy previously relayed that Benioff, Weiss and The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson have been planning out the future of the Star Wars franchise for over “the next ten years or more.”

It’s unclear if this alleged KOTOR movie will have anything to do with Obsidian’s beloved sequel, Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, but we do know Obsidian once had big plans for a third KOTOR game.

In our original Knights of the Old Republic review, we called the game “Amazing” saying “Knights of the Old Republic is an outstanding game because it covers every single angle in terms of audience expectations. It’s got enough Star Wars to satisfy the fans and enough pure fun to draw in people who normally wouldn’t get into role-playing games.”
