The bug first popped up in the 2012 PC port, but had already been fixed.
Final Fantasy 7’s Switch port quietly received an update that seems to fix one of its most notorious bugs: an audio glitch that has been reintroduced in nearly all of its modern ports.
The now-squashed bug caused the game’s overworld music to restart from the beginning of the song after every battle. It’s not the worst bug in the world, but can make playing significantly more repetitive as you’ll rarely hear more than the opening moments of any overworld song… and you’ll hear it a whole lot.
Frustratingly, this particular audio bug has been a recurring nightmare for longtime fans. It dates back almost a full decade at this point, first present in the modern PC port of FF7 from 2012 before popping up again in the PS4 port from 2015.
It was eventually fixed on PC, which made people even more upset when it returned once more with the Switch launch this past March. Thankfully, players on the Nintendo Switch subreddit are now reporting that the recent 1.0.1 software update has finally solved things.
Another long-standing bug that causes FF7’s screen to flash black when it transitions from cutscene to gameplay has also seemingly been fixed alongside the audio issue. Players are still trying to figure out what else has changed as Square Enix hasn’t posted patch notes for this unexpected update as of yet.
This patch comes hot off the heels of a new Final Fantasy 7 Remake trailer from last week, which is PS4-exclusive, as well as news that it would likely still be an episodic game.
