Will pro Torbjorn players get their justice?

According to multiple reports, Blizzard plans to effectively end the three tanks, three healers (or “GOATS) meta that has become the norm in most Overwatch League matches, and been a common complaint among viewers

In an original report from Upcomer, the esports news site claimed that multiple sources it had within the Overwatch League had told them that Blizzard will implement a 2-2-2 role lock for teams starting in the league’s fourth stage starting July 25.

According to PC Gamer, former Overwatch pro Baek “Fissure” Chan-hyung, himself a former tank main for Seoul Dynasty, later repeated the rumor in a stream shortly following his retirement announcement. Chan-hyung echoed that the 2-2-2 role lock had already been decided for stage four of the League.

“I’m retired now so I’ll say it. Next stage, stage 4, 2-2-2 lock is decided,” Chan-hyung said, according to multiple translations of this clip from Twitch.

2-2-2 typically refers to two assault/defense characters, two tanks, and two healers/supports. In previous stages of the Overwatch League, the “GOATS” meta (three healers, three tanks) had evolved into the predominant team makeup, given the tank’s high health pools and how difficult it could be to eliminate a tank being healed by up to three support characters. Though even the GOATS meta had its variations, it almost always meant that certain characters wouldn’t receive any play time, like Reaper, Symmetra, Soldier 76, or Mei, to name just a few.

The move to lock League players to 2-2-2 could upset some team balances that relied on the GOATS meta. In addition to that, the move is notably going against what Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan told Kotaku last year, saying that a rigid role locking system “hurts the spirit of the game.”
