The listing might indicate that the game is still a seriously long way off.

Developer Retro Studios tweeted a job listing today looking for an Art Director for Metroid Prime 4.

The listing describes the position as a key role in the game’s development, saying the Art Director will “lead the collaborative development of Metroid Prime 4’s artistic direction.”

As seen in the image above, the Art Director role will also be responsible for setting the “artistic vision” of Metroid Prime 4, ensuring that vision and the quality of it is met on schedule, and “collaborating between the Art Team and [Nintendo].”

Retro Studios had previously tweeted that it was hiring for a number of roles at the end of April, three months after Nintendo announced that Metroid Prime 4’s development was restarting with Retro at the helm – a move that our own Lucy O’Brien praised for setting an important standard for developer transparency.

While only speculation, this latest call for an Art Director makes it seem like Metroid Prime 4 is still a seriously long way away. While Nintendo said it was “well in development” last November, the project restarting two months later and Retro still looking for someone to set an artistic vision for the game as a whole even now means it’s likely very early on.

We’ve also previously taken a look at who is (and isn’t) still at Retro Studios that worked on the original Metroid Prime trilogy – notably here, Metroid Prime 1 and 2 Lead Artist and Metroid Prime 3 Art Director Todd Keller left Retro in 2008.

So while we aren’t sure exactly what this job listing means for where Metroid Prime 4 is at in development, I’d be willing to guess that you probably won’t want to hold your breath.
