Dungeons and Dragons’ next story adventure, Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus, will send players to hell, Wizards of the Coast announced today.

The new 256-page book will be released on September 17 and focus on the city of Baldur’s Gate as it slowly succumbs to the sway of corrupt powers and evil gods. Adventurers will then get the chance to descend into the first layer of the Nine Hells to discover whether there’s a chance for redemption.

Designed by Chris Perkins, Principle Narrative Designer for Dungeons & Dragons, and described as “hell meets Mad Max: Fury Road,” the adventure will take players from level 1 to level 13 as they explore the war-torn Avernus, the fire-blasted first level of the Nine Hells that’s locked in an endless war between devils and the chaotic demons of The Abyss.

Players will see The Blood War, as it’s called, first hand and may even get the chance to dive into it themselves if they’re brave (or foolish) enough.

An alternate cover of the Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus, designed by Hydro74, is also planned for release only in game stores alongside the standard version which is available everywhere.

A custom dice pack themed around Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus will also be released (sold separately) alongside the adventure book. The kit comes with a set of themed dice, the box itself that can be used as a dice tray, a map of Avernus, and more.

All weekend long Wizards of the Coast is bringing together the Dungeons and Dragons community at DnDLive 2019: The Descent to reveal new products and share information about the future of the tabletop roleplaying game.

Earlier this year, Wizards of the Coast revealed Ghosts of Saltmarsh [which you can buy right now], an adventure book that revitalizes some of the best sea-faring adventures from earlier editions of Dungeons and Dragons.

While we wait for this new adventure, why not check out the newly announced D&D Essentials Kit, some of the best DnD accessories and gifts, or the upcoming Rick & Morty/D&D crossover, or this awesome Stranger Things-inspired starter set.
