“I insisted on getting paid for my performance.”

Borderlands 3’s Claptrap, as many fans noticed from this week’s gameplay reveal, has a new voice, and both Gearbox and the original voice actor have weighed in on why that is.

The original voice actor for Claptrap, David Eddings, revealed on Twitter that he wasn’t reprising his role in Borderlands 3 as he allegedly “… insisted on getting paid for my performance and all of a sudden they couldn’t afford me.”

After reaching out to Gearbox, an official spokesperson told IGN:

“Gearbox works to treat and compensate all voice actors at industry standards. We offer the opportunity for salaried employees to voice characters in the game, but is not a mandatory responsibility to their job requirements. In this particular case, now that he was no longer an employee, we offered him an industry standard rate, but were not able to reach an agreement. We are confident and happy with Jim Foronda as the voice of Claptrap, and we are confident our fans will be too.”

Eddings previously worked for Gearbox as VP of business development for nearly 12 years, and voiced Claptrap in addition to his primary role. In 2017, he moved on to Rooster Teeth as head of game publishing, and is no longer an employee of Gearbox. While Eddings’ initial comments on the matter may appear negative, he subsequently wrote “In the end, my exit from GBX created at least three job opportunities for other people so that’s a positive.”

The new voice actor for Claptrap is Jim Foronda, known for his work on various Funimation shows, including many credits across the Dragon Ball franchise. After Borderlands 3’s gameplay reveal, Foronda posted on Twitter “Here’s my official announcement saying what many of you already figured out: I am voicing Claptrap in #Borderlands3. Thanks for your support– I promise you all that I’ll be the best Clappy I can be!”

Claptrap isn’t the only role in Borderlands 3 that has changed hands, as Troy Baker, the original voice actor of Rhys, will not be returning for the latest installment. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford suggested Baker turned the role down, though Baker quickly clarified that he “would love to come back” and that it wasn’t his decision. Ultimately, the role has been taken up by Ray Chase.
